Layne Merritt, Vice President and General Manager of Airborne Systems at Intellisense Systems, Elected to Board of Directors of Vertical Lift Consortium

Merritt will serve alongside a dozen other leaders, researchers, and scientists to develop and transition innovative vertical lift technologies to rapidly meet the needs of the U.S. Military.

December 21, 2022 – Torrance, CAIntellisense Systems is proud to announce that Layne Merritt, the Vice President and General Manager of Airborne Systems, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Vertical Lift Consortium (VLC). Merritt will serve alongside 17 other business leaders, researchers, and scientists who are committed to furthering vertical lift and takeoff technology for the federal government. As an elected board member, he will serve a two-year term from January 2023 through December 2024.

The VLC is a collaboration of both large and small government contractors, academic institutions, and research organizations working collaboratively with the U.S. Government in the development and transition of innovative vertical lift technologies. The organization seeks to rapidly and affordably meet the military’s vertical takeoff and landing needs. The organization conducts coordinated research and development programs designed to develop prototype aviation technologies, which include aeromechanics, rotorcraft structures, vehicle management systems, human-machine interfaces, and much more.

In his current role as the VP/GM of Airborne Systems at Intellisense, Merritt is responsible for developing and delivering a growing portfolio of avionics systems and airborne displays. He brings more than 38 years of aviation experience to Intellisense. Layne has managed and led technology and product development activities in positions such as Chief Technology Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Engineer, and Program Manager in both the public and private sector. He also served 22 years with the U.S. Army as an operational pilot, experimental test pilot, and acquisition officer. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota State University, a M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, and is a graduate of the Naval Test Pilot School.

He and the rest of the Intellisense team look forward to playing a growing leadership role in the vertical lift community.
